In 2008 at age 17, i applied to university to do midwifery. Did i think i had the guts and confidence to do it, absolutely not. But i felt the pull towards it. Or was the pull actually the fact that it was a free degree funded by the government and my family was poor at the time - maybe! My dad was a dentist (actually a security guard trying to get into dentistry - typical immigrant story) My step-mum was a nurse. So it made sense that i also got into a health related career. Midwifery made sense. So i applied and proceeded to the university interviews.
I remember being so nervous. I remember the group interview with a task we all had to discuss. I remember being intimidated by all the other grown women in the room who were mostly converting from nursing into midwifery. I remember nervously sitting in front of a panel alone answering questions on why i wanted to become a midwife.
Then... I received the email - It confirmed i had secured a place at the university. The excitement. The ecstasy. I was going to become a midwife.
Afew months later, i remember confidently handing my step-mum a document to sign. In order to do the course, you had to be either a British citizen or an EU National or a dependent of an EU National. I was a dependent of an EU national. The university needed my step-mum to sign the document and provide a copy of her passport - normal administrative things.
Long story short, my step-mum refused to sign the paperwork. Yes. This grown ass woman who had my future in the palm of her hand refused to sign. My dad pleaded with her. I pleaded with her. The whole house was tense for months.
Why? Why would someone do that to a child you ask? Because i was a bargaining chip in a failing marriage Because she was an evil b**tch Because she did not care Take a pick
Fast forward to 2026 Aged 35 Sitting in an office At a desk Doing payroll A job i hate And wondering how the fuck i got here.
